Week 2: Game of the Week

The second week of college football is usually a little more exciting then the first. Some elite teams will take chances to travel to other BCS level schools, while others will continue playing cupcakes. This week sees a number of top 25 games (where last week only had 1), with a number of conference games sprinkled in.

So, which game is our game of the week this week? I'll give you a hint, it's not Michigan-Notre Dame.

Game of the Week: #3 Alabama @ #25 Penn State

This week saw a number of games aiming for game of the week status. It was tough to choose just one, but in the end Alabama-Penn State came out victorious. It's necessary to state that I don't think this game is particularly likely to feature an upset for Alabama. I do feel that if any top 10 team is going to lose this week, it will be Alabama at the hands of Penn State.

Last year Penn State headed to Tuscaloosa for a game against a top ranked Alabama team, and they were killed. The game was never close, and it was a win that led some to believe Alabama was headed to the championship game. They ended up forfeiting that to Auburn, but this year they are looking for a championship and know that a repeat performance against Penn State is necessary. This game won't be quite so skewed in favor of Alabama, but Penn State needs to seriously watch their backs lest they end up in a 20 point hole.

Penn State is looking to get some wins on the table after a handful of unimpressive seasons over the past few years. Joe Paterno is still around and is still considered a very good coach, but can he get the job done at his age? It's yet to be seen, but Penn State knows that if they want any chance in the BCS they need to play Alabama closely. If they are blown out for a second straight year they will instantly lose a lot of credibility with voters. A win isn't necessary, but a good game would be a good stepping stone for Penn State this year.
